Basic: Pure research not for immediate application

Translational: Basic + applied research used to create empirically supported treatments

Applied: Directly addressing real-world problems with immediate use

Requirements for ethical “deception”

• methodologically necessary

• little to no risk

• participants are made aware of deception later

Ethical concerns for vulnerable population research?

• informed consent

• capacity to understand risk

• potential of coercion

Difference between anonymous and confidential data?

Anonymous: No collection of identifying info

Confidential: Protected collection of identifying info
