Homogeneous mixtures
Mixtures that are uniform and have the same composition throughout.
Solute
A substance that is dissolved in a solvent.
Solvent
The substance in which another substance (the solute) is dissolved.
Solubility
The maximum amount of a substance that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specified temperature.
Saturated Solution
A solution that contains the maximum amount of dissolved solute at equilibrium.
Supersaturated Solution
A solution that contains more solute than the saturated solution, typically formed when conditions change.
Miscible
Substances that have no maximum solubility and cannot form saturated solutions with each other.
Like dissolves like
The principle that compounds with similar intermolecular forces tend to dissolve in one another.
Henry’s Law
The solubility of a gas is directly proportional to the partial pressure of the gas if the temperature is held constant.
Percent Concentration
A unit of concentration that expresses the amount of solute in 100 amounts of total solution.
Mass/Volume Percent Concentration
A specific way to express concentration for solid solutes in liquid solutions.
Volume/Volume Percent Concentration
A specific way to express concentration for liquid/liquid solutions.
