What are the lower leg compartment groups?
Superficial posterior, deep posterior, anterior, and lateral
Gastrocnemius
Origin: posterior medial and lateral condyles of femur. Insertion: calcaneus
Soleus
Origin: posterior interosseous membrane, tibia, and fibula. Insertion: calcaneus
Plantaris
Origin: lateral supracondylar ridge of femur. Insertion: calcaneus
Tibialis Posterior
Origin: interosseous membrane, tibia, and fibula. Insertion: navicular and most tarsals and metatarsals
Flexor Hallucis Longus
Origin: posterior fibula and interosseous membrane. Insertion: plantar base of phalanx of great toe
Flexor Digitorum Longus
Origin: posterior tibia. Insertion: distal phalanx of lesser 4 toes
Tibialis Anterior
Origin: proximal lateral tibia and interosseous membrane. Insertion: first cuneiform and first metatarsal
Extensor Hallucis Longus
Origin: proximal anterior fibula and interosseous membrane. Insertion: dorsum of base of distal phalanx of great toe
Extensor Digitorum Longus
Origin: proximal anterior fibula, interosseous membrane, and anterior lateral condyle of tibia. Insertion: dorsum of base of distal phalanx of 4 lesser toes
Peroneus Longus
Origin: head of fibula and interosseous membrane. Insertion: plantar surface of medial cuneiform and first metatarsal
Peroneus Brevis
Origin: middle lateral fibula. Insertion: base of 5th metatarsal
Peroneus Tertius
Origin: distal medial fibula and interosseous membrane. Insertion: base of 5th metatarsal
