Sign
An observable, measurable indicator of illness that a clinician can quantify (e.g., rash, heart rate, temperature).
Rash
A visible skin eruption that can be observed during examination; a common sign of infection or dermatologic conditions.
Heart rate
The number of heartbeats per minute; a measurable parameter considered a sign when assessed in clinical examination.
Temperature
Body temperature; a measurable vital sign that can function as a sign when assessed during clinical evaluation.
Objective sign
An indicator of illness that can be observed and quantified by someone other than the patient, not relying on patient report.
Symptom
A subjective experience reported by the patient (e.g., pain, discomfort) that cannot be directly measured by others.
Discomfort
A subjective feeling of unease or pain reported by the patient.
Pain
A subjective experience of unpleasant sensation; in shingles, often described as severe or agonizing pain.
Shingles
A reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus presenting with a painful rash and characteristic nerve pain.
Agonizing pain
Extremely severe pain commonly associated with shingles.
