what is the genital system?
system that controls reproductive processes
male genitalia are outside the pelvic cavity, with the exception of the prostate gland and seminal vesicles
female genitalia are contained entirely within the pelvis, with the exception of the clitoris and labia
what are the testicles?
each testicle contains specialized cells for reproduction and ducts, and hormones are absorbed directly into the bloodstream from the testicles
how does sperm travel from testicles to urethra?
sperm are immature and moved from the testicles to the epididymis so they can develop → during ejaculation, sperm is carried through vasa deferentia [vas deferens] to urethra
how does reproduction occur in females?
ovaries produce sex hormones and specialized cells [eggs] for reproduction → egg matures and is released from ovaries every 28 days during reproductive years → eggs travels through fallopian tubes where fertilization will occur via sperm → fallopian tubes connect with the uterus and carries egg into the cavity of the organ
at completion of pregnancy, the neonate is expelled from the uterus through the cervix, and it will pass through the vagina to birth
what is the vagina?
a muscular, distensible tube that connects the uterus [pear shaped, hollow organ with muscular walls] with the vulva [external female genitalia]
channels menstrual flow from uterus out the body
