Facial bones
This is the second part of th skull with 14 bones, forming the face
Types of cranial bones
Frontal
Parental
Occipital
Temporal
Sphenoid
Vomer
Inferior Nasal concha
Types of facial bones
Nasal
Maxillae
Zygomatic
Mandible
Lacrimal
Palatine
Coronal Sutures
Parietal to frontal bones
Squamous sutures
Parietal to temporal bones
Sagittal sutures
Right to left parietal
Lambdoid sutures
Parietal to occipital bones
Sutural Bones
Small, irregular shaped bones on different areas of the body within sutures.
Not everyone has these!
Paired cranial bones
Temporal and parietal bone
Unpaired cranial bones
Frontal, occupational, sphenoid, and ethmoid
Paired Bones
The bones are symmetrical with each other, there are two
Unpaired bones
These bones have only one
Frontal bone
Forehead to the top of the eye socket
contains a paranasal sinus
Temporal
Sides of the skull to the external auditory meatus
connects by joints to the mandible
Contains the mastoid process near the bottom skull
Parietal
Sides to the roof of the cranium
Occipital
Lower back of the skull to the base
Contains the
Foramen magnum (hole in the skull)
Occipital condyles (below the eye socket)
Sphenoid
Posterior to the eye socket
Has a paranasal sinus
Floor of the cranial cavity
Ethmoid
Medial wall of eye socket
Has a Paranasal sinus
Contains the nasal cavity wall
Unpaired facial bones
Mandible and vomer
Paired facial bones
Maxillae
Zygomatic bones
Nasal bones
Lacrimal bones
Palatine bones
Zygomatic bones
Lateral to the walls of the eye socket (orbits)
Cheek bones
Lacrimal bones
In the medial orbital walls
Nasal bone
Forms the bridge of the nose
Palatine bones
The posterior part of the hard palate in your mouth
Maxilla
Looks like a keystone
Roof of your mouth
Holds the teeth
Paranasal sinus
Inferior nasal conchae
Thin curved bones that are on the lateral side of the nasal cavity
Mandible
Strongest facial bone (jaw), it is the only moveable bone in ur facial bones other than the auditory ossicles.
Vomer
Inferior part of the nasal septum
Hyoid bone
Located underneath your jaw, it is the only floating bone in the body as it is connected to the body via ligaments only
Nasal Septum
Contains:
Superior extension of the vomer
Perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone
Haylie cartilage
Nasal conchae
Contains the superior and middle concha project from the ethmoid
filters and swirls air before the lungs
Paranasal Sinuses
Located within
frontal
Ethmoid
Sphenoid
Maxillary
Lightens the skull and lines the sinus with mucous membranes
Wormian Bone
This type of bone is a larger form of a suture bone, usually the size of the 4 different bones that make up the top and bottom of the skull
