Personnel Selection
The process of determining who to hire and who not to hire.
Predictor Validity
The extent to which a predictor accurately predicts a criterion, such as job performance.
Selection Battery
A set of tests or predictors used for hiring decisions.
Cutoff Score
The determining value that separates successful from unsuccessful candidates.
Base Rate
The percentage of employees who would be successful on a criterion of workplace performance under random hiring.
False Positive
An incorrect decision where a candidate is hired but does not succeed in the role.
False Negative
An incorrect decision where a candidate is not hired but would have succeeded in the role.
Banding
Grouping similar performance scores together to determine selection.
Applicant Selection Methods
Various methods used to identify Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other characteristics (KSAOs) in applicants.
Structured Application Form
A form that helps to filter out candidates who do not meet essential KSAOs.
Psychometric Tests
Tests that measure mental capabilities and behavioral style, including personality and cognitive ability.
Diversity-Validity Dilemma
The challenge of balancing workforce productivity with equal opportunity, as individuals from different groups may not score equally on selection tests.
