Eating disorder
Illnesses characterized by abnormal eating behaviors; not character flaws or choices; cannot diagnose by appearance; individuals can be underweight, normal weight, or overweight.
Genetic factors
Genes identified as contributing to eating disorders; associated with specific personality traits and risk.
Biochemical factors
Abnormal levels of chemicals that regulate appetite, mood, sleep, and stress in individuals with eating disorders.
Anorexia nervosa
Disorder typically developing in adolescence or young adulthood; more common in women; individuals perceive themselves as overweight despite being underweight; monitor weight, restrict calories, and avoid certain foods.
Bulimia nervosa
Disorder often beginning in adolescence or early adulthood; more common in women; characterized by frequently eating unusually large amounts of food in a short period of time.
Binge eating disorder
Disorder beginning in adolescence or early adulthood; symptoms resemble bulimia or the binge-eating subtype of anorexia; involves eating unusually large amounts in short periods and a lack of control during binges.
ARFID (Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder)
Disorder replacing 'feeding disorder of infancy and early childhood'; previously for children under 7; individuals have disturbed eating due to lack of interest or distaste for smells, tastes, colors, textures, or temperatures.
Fuel eating
Eating to provide nutrition; consuming nutrient-dense foods (fruits, vegetables, lean meats, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats); intended to occur about 90% of the time.
Joy eating
Eating for pleasure because it tastes good.
Fog eating
Mindless eating where the person is not conscious of how much is eaten (e.g., snacking while watching TV).
Storm eating
Eating when not hungry but aware, and feeling unable to stop.
