sporting group
one of the oldest and largest; bred for hunting
3 subgroups of the sporting group and functions
forerunners - go ahead to find game then silently point it out to owner
flushing - herd game to owner for easy pickings
retrievers - as name suggests, with good noses and eyesight
hound group
may be the oldest purebred dogs and they are very diverse with a common ancestral trait used for hunting — sight and scent
herding group
used to be a part of the working group; the newest group; not good with kids; need a dominant owner
terrier
bred to kill vermin; also not typically great with kids
toy group
typically miniaturized versions of other breeds but this is not always the case; kept by royalty until recently and guarded treasure
non-sporting group
“catch-all” group with no real similarities between them
working group
used to include the herding members; now split into 3 groups
3 subgroups in herding group
sled - pull sleds and have a thick double coat to resist arctic winds and temperatures
guard - protect flock mainly but also physical property
resue - help in dire situations or pull nets
brittany
named after French province; natural pointers and good retrievers; friendly; tail is naturally short
labrador retriever
was the #1 breed for 31 years until 3 years ago; gentle temperament (many bites reported but may be due to ignorance); American is functional, English is show
cocker spaniel
spain is the namesake; developed for bird hunting; smallest breed of the sporting grouop
german shorthaired pointer
“perfect pointer”; easy to train and want to make their owner proud; cone degeneration is common
dachshund
chondrodystrophy forms their back; bred in Germany; can be hard to housetrain due to hunting characteristics but are affectionate
plott hound
official dog of NC because they were bred in the mountains by a German family; “Plott music” is when they bark and whine really loud
saluki
one of the oldest breeds; was the royal dog of Egypt; can be high energy; have very long legs
whippet
like a mini-grey hound (fastest one of its group); likely to experience bloat because of deep-chestedness; name comes from Whappet but are kind of quiet; sight hounds
belgian malinois
need an extremely dominant owner; will try to herd anyone; only wants to please 1 owner
border collie
most popular farm dog; great herders; do good in agility competitions; allowed to be shown with honorable scars and broken teeth incurred in the line of duty
australian cattle dog
“bluey”; the majority have a spot(s) over at least 1 of their eyes; vital to the Australian Beef cattle industry; related to the Dingo
berger picard
named after Picardy region of France; almost went extinct; appear in lots of movies because they’re very trainable
american staffordshire terrier
often confused with the “Pitbull”; pit type dog; super muscular; wasn’t officially called the AST until 1972; “Nanny Dog”
parson russell terrier
named after Reverend John Russell; have a collapsible rib cage
bull terrier
“Target Dog”; chondrodystrophy egghead, open to strangers (which is unusual for a terrier)
west highland white terrier
cesar pet food; part of the terriers of Scotland; sociable and playful with high energy
chihuahua
applehead and deerhead; from Mexico; people thought they came from Fennec Foxes, were used in sacrificial ceremonies
chinese crested
ancestral ones have hair on head, ears, and plume white powderpuff have hair all over; used to hunt vermin on Chinese ships; gain weight easily
pug
bad; brachycephaly, curled tail that’s too curled, can scream themselves to death
pomeranian
named after Pomerania, where their miniaturization occurred; are descendants of sled dogs from the Northern parts of the world, associated with Queen Victoria (shower and breeder), Marie Antoinette, and Mozart
bulldog
used to be involved in bull baiting (namesake); older traits are trying to be bred back to fix the issues; notorious underbite and drooling
chow chow
wrinkled face; said to be the original ancestor of the pomeranian, samoyed & other arctic breeds; used for hunting bears and wolves; notorious blue/black tongue
dalmatian
were coach dogs and now associated with firefighters because of that; high uric acid levels in their blood and need a special diet; “spotted dick”
boston terrier
arose from a cross between a bulldog and the extinct white English Terrier; all bt’s have the common ancestor “barnard tom”; nickname is the “american gentleman”
rottweiler
bred in Germany; typically black/dark with orange eyebrows; can be difficult to train; used to work with police and herd
giant schnauzer
not a true giant breed; used as herders and police dogs; Risenschnauzer means “the giant”ko
komondor
white corded coat meant to fool sheep; basically can’t be bit; originated in Hungary
newfoundland
super gentle temperament; drool lots; partially webbed feet
