Input Device

Any specialized hardware peripheral that allows the entry of data and instructions into a computer.

Peripheral

Any hardware devices connected and controlled by the CPU.

Keyboard

Facilitates entry of letters, numbers, and symbols into a computer; keypresses do computer commands.

Mouse

Moves a pointer on a screen; clicking selects an item, double-clicking opens a document, right-clicking displays a list of commands, and dragging & dropping moves a document/text.

Trackpad

Moves a pointer on a screen, commonly found on laptops.

Joystick

Moves a pointer on a screen according to lever movement, commonly used when playing computer games.

Light Pen / Digital Tablet

Used like a pen to draw, works with a light and monitor, or to capture handwriting with a digital tablet.

Scanner

Captures digital images and converts them into text, diagrams, pictures, etc.

Barcode Reader

Made up of columns of thick and thin lines representing a string of numbers; provides information when scanned, such as manufacturer, number in stock, and is used in supermarkets, etc.
