Clean Air Act (CAA)
1970, Established primary and secondary air quality standards. Required states to develop implementation plans. Sets limits and goals to reduce mobile source air pollution and ambient air quality standards.
Clean Water Act (CWA)
1972; set maximum permissible amounts of water pollutants that can be discharged into waterways; aims to make surface waters swimmable and fishable
CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species)
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species; international agreement between 175 governments that aims to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival
CERCLA (Superfund Act)
Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (Superfund) 1980; To facilitate the cleanup of any abandoned or uncontrolled sites containing hazardous substances and to impose strict liability for cleanup costs on potentially responsible parties
Montreal Protocol
meeting in 1987 where a group of nations met in Canada and agreed to take steps to fight against Ozone Depletion-CFC's banned
Kyoto Protocol
(2005) controlling global warming by setting greenhouse gas emissions targets for developed countries
Endangered Species Act
(1973) identifies threatened and endangered species in the U.S., and puts their protection ahead of economic considerations
Safe Water Drinking Act
1974- set maximum contaminant levels for pollutants in drinking water that may have adverse effects on human health
Delaney Clause
amendment to food, drug, and cosmetic act -- stating that no food substance/ additive can be considered safe if it produced cancer
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
Management of non-hazardous and hazardous solid waste including landfills and storage tanks. Set minimal standards for all waste disposal facilities and for hazardous wastes. 1976
