Quantitative research generates

numerical data

New cards
2

quantitative data uses an…

deductive approach (aceptting or disproving the hypothesis)

New cards
3

what are 3 types of quantitative methods

experiments, surveys, and correlational studies

New cards
4

what are correlation studies?

Used to test the association between variables where variables are only observed with no manipulation by the researcher.

New cards
5

what are 3 types of correlation and explain them

  • positive correlation: when both variables increase

  • negative correlation: when one variable increases the other decreases

  • curvilinear relationship: when both variables increase to a certain point, after when one variable increases the other decreases (also goes the other way around)

6

What is biodirectonal ambigity?

occurs in correlational studies since there is no manipulated IV, so no cause and effect can be determined. Due to this bidirectional ambiguity is caused since researchers are unsure if x causes y, y causes x.

New cards
7

what are surveys?

A survey is a set of questions and the process of collecting, compiling, and analyzing the responses from those questions. Surveys produce quantitative data that can be analysed through the use of descriptive statistics.

New cards
8

most common type of survey

Likert Scale

New cards
9

strengths and weaknesses of surveys

strengths

  • quantitative data is obtained (can be analysed using statistical methods)

limitations

  • social desirability

  • cultural differences

"gravitate to the mean" and choose "undecided" or "no opinion" more frequently than American participants, who were more likely to choose the extremes, especially when the question asked about opinions that were emotionally based.

  • limited choose in answers that only partially reflect what they think (expression)
