Photosynthesis
The process through which green plants combine carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight to produce glucose and oxygen.
Chlorophyll
A green pigment found in plants that is essential for photosynthesis, enabling the capture of sunlight energy.
Stomata
Small openings on the undersides of leaves that allow for gas exchange, taking in carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen.
Xylem
The vascular tissue responsible for the transport of water and minerals from the roots to the leaves in plants.
Phloem
The vascular tissue that transports food, in the form of sugars, from the leaves to other parts of the plant.
Osmosis
The movement of water molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration across a semipermeable membrane.
Transpiration
The process of continuous loss of water vapor from the aerial parts of plants, primarily through stomata.
Ascent of sap
The upward movement of sap containing water and minerals through the xylem in plants.
Translocation
The process by which food prepared by plants is transported in a soluble form to all parts of the plant.
Guard cells
Cells that surround and control the opening and closing of stomata, regulating gas exchange in plants.
Respiration in plants
The process through which plants break down glucose in the presence of oxygen to release energy, producing carbon dioxide and water as byproducts.
Autotrophs
Organisms, such as green plants, that can produce their own food using simple substances from their surroundings.
Minerals
Essential nutrients absorbed from the soil by plants, necessary for growth and metabolic processes.
Decolourising leaves
The process of removing chlorophyll from leaves to test for the presence of starch using iodine.
Glucose
A simple sugar produced by plants during photosynthesis, serving as a primary energy source.
