a hard protective layer made of calcium carbonate, inedible and porous, vary in colour based on breed but colour does not affect nutrition, thin membrane inside enclosing white and leaves air space at wider end of egg

viscous, dark yellow centre, held in place by chalazae, most nutritious, made of proteins vitellin, livetin, sat. fat, cholesterol, lecithin, minerals, vitamins and water
