Canine Coordinator
The person responsible for documenting training deficiencies and corrections within the canine unit.
Industry Standard Training Hours
A minimum of 16 hours per month of training required for each canine team.
Reputable Kennel
A kennel with a selection process for police service canines, offering guarantees for health and trainability.
Qualified Trainer
An individual versed in the areas necessary to accomplish the canine's chosen task and complete certification.
Veterinarian Care
Includes adequate care, periodic parasite checks, rabies vaccinations, other vaccines/boosters, and heartworm preventative.
Kenneling Costs
The Department will provide up to $200 per canine per year for kenneling costs when the handler is unable to care for the canine.
Securing Building Perimeter
A procedure where Department personnel ensure the building perimeter is secure before a canine team is summoned for a search.
Verbal Announcement (Canine Search)
Includes identifying the canine handler as a police officer and advising that a police canine will be released unless the person(s) surrender peacefully.
Command to Disengage
The command given as soon as all suspects are subdued or readily comply with directions during an apprehension.
Pursuit Protocol
When canine is released, advise other officers via radio; do not run in front of canine; handler follows the canine until suspect is apprehended.
Tracking Suspects/Missing Persons
Pinpoint last observed location, keep individuals out of search area, secure perimeter, protect evidence.
Controlled Substance Search Protocol
Area to be searched cleared of people and animals; plain view controlled substances may be removed and shown to the handler before the search begins.
Crowd Control Protocol
Canine is typically on a short leash; not initiate any offensive action unless to guard against eminent loss of life or serious bodily injury.
Explosive Detection Search Protocol
Clear area of people and animals; officers should not search prior to canine arrival; suspect packages or vehicles are NOT searched by the canine.
