Alum
Potassium aluminum sulfate dodecahydrate, KAl(SO4)2 . 12H2O, used for dyes, adhesives, and inducing vomiting in dogs.
Exothermic Reaction
A reaction that releases heat, as seen in the dissolution of aluminum in KOH.
Theoretical Yield
The maximum amount of product that can be produced from a given amount of reactants.
Limiting Reactant
The reactant that is completely consumed first in a reaction, limiting the amount of product formed.
Percent Yield
The ratio of the actual yield of a product to the theoretical yield, expressed as a percentage.
Hydrogen Gas (H2)
A highly flammable gas produced in the reaction and should not be inhaled.
Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4)
A strong acid used in the synthesis of alum, added dropwise to prevent lumps.
Aluminum Oxide
A compound that can form during the reaction, appearing as black particles.
Decanting
The process of pouring off the liquid to separate it from the crystals.
Glass Wool
A material used in filtration to remove dark particles from the solution.
