Alcohol
An intoxicating ingredient in fermented or distilled beverages.
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)
The ratio of alcohol in a person’s blood by weight.
Standard Drink
Typically contains 0.6 ounces of alcohol.
Cirrhosis
A disease in which the liver is severely damaged, often by alcohol.
Binge Drinking
Rapid drinking that raises BAC to 0.08 percent or higher within two hours.
Alcohol Poisoning
A serious condition resulting from drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short time.
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
Lifelong disabilities caused by alcohol consumption during pregnancy.
Tolerance
The need for increased amounts of alcohol to achieve the same effect.
Nicotine
A powerful psychoactive drug found in tobacco that causes addiction.
Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS)
A Class A carcinogen that includes mainstream smoke and sidestream smoke.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
A group of lung diseases that block airflow and make it difficult to breathe.
Secondhand Smoke
Smoke that is inhaled involuntarily from tobacco being smoked by others.
Addiction
The continued use of a substance despite negative consequences.
Withdrawal Symptoms
Physical and mental effects that occur when a person stops using a substance they are dependent on.
Nurtition Deficiencies
Health issues that arise from insufficient intake of nutrients, often seen in severe alcohol use disorder.
Additives in Cigarettes
Substances added to cigarettes to enhance flavor or nicotine delivery.
Cognitive Impairments
A decline in cognitive functioning, often associated with alcohol use disorder.
Sedation
The act of calming or inducing sleep, often a result of alcohol consumption.
