authoritarianism
refers to the absence of democracy, characterized by certain ideologies or behavioral tendencies favorable to hierarchy and to closed, non-concentrated processes of decision making. In these systems civil and political rights are restricted.
democratic breakdown
the transition of a democratic regime to authoritarianism.
authoritarian persistence
is the continuation of authoritarianism in a state. It is one of two pathways by which authoritarianism exists.
totalitarianism
is the most extreme form of authoritarian regimes which aims at total control over ideology, restricting civil rights and political rights, and implementing strong interventionist politics. These regimes have various strategies to control society such as repression and information control censorship. This is a modern phenomenon because the modern state has access to and controls all organized violence, borders, information, etc.
theocratic regimes
centered on religious leadership with strict religious policies and religious legitimacy.
personalistic power
is when the power is concentrated in one individual. The leader's personality is central to politics. If something happens to the leader the system could potentially crumble.
bureaucratic authoritarianism
is when a group of elites control the power in the state. It can be a political party like in china or a military like in egypt.
hybrid authoritarianism
has both elements of democracy and authoritarianism.
illiberal democracy
has some democratic features but political and civil rights are not guaranteed or protected because they do not hold elected leaders accountable
electoral authoritarianism
is a regime that holds elections but does not change the power or the power changes from authoritarian regime to authoritarian regime.
