World Health Organization (WHO)
A specialized agency of the United Nations concerned with international public health, established on 7 April 1948.
Goal of Healthcare Systems
Improving population health and equity, responsiveness, and financial protection.
Fair Financing
A health system that does not deter individuals from receiving needed care due to financial payments required at the time of service.
Responsiveness
The response to individuals’ legitimate expectations regarding non-health enhancing aspects of the health system.
Health
The general condition of being well; a level of functional and/or metabolic efficiency of an organism.
Biomedical Model
A model focusing on the physical or biological aspects of disease and illness and associated with the diagnosis, cure, and treatment of disease.
Social Model
A conceptual framework that achieves health improvements by addressing social, economic, and environmental determinants of health.
Holistic Model
A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Wellness Model
The strength and ability to overcome illness, embodying a 'reserve of health'.
Environmental Model
Health related to the ability of an organism to maintain balance with its environment.
