Appendectomy
A surgical procedure to remove the appendix, often indicated for appendicitis.
Signs of Peritonitis
Increased heart rate, increased respiration, increased temperature, intense abdominal pain and distention.
McBurney's Point
The location of the most pain in appendicitis, found one-third distance between the belly button and the anterior superior iliac spine.
Sickle Cell Crisis
A painful episode caused by vaso-occlusive events leading to reduced blood flow.
IVIG
Intravenous immunoglobulin, used in treatments such as for Kawasaki disease.
Cholecystitis
Inflammation of the gallbladder, often due to gallstones.
Gallop Heart Rhythm
An abnormal heart rhythm characterized by a rhythm similar to that of a galloping horse.
Hematological Status
Refers to the health of blood components, often monitored in various medical conditions.
SIDS
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, the sudden and unexplained death of an infant.
Nephrology
A branch of medicine concerned with the kidneys and their diseases.
Tachycardia
Abnormally rapid heart rate.
Hypovolemia
A decrease in the volume of blood plasma.
Exacerbation
A worsening of symptoms or an increase in the severity of a disease.
Rebound Tenderness
Pain that is felt upon the release of pressure on the abdomen, indicative of peritoneal irritation.
Hyperkalemia
An elevated level of potassium in the blood, often seen in acute kidney injury.
NPO
Nil per os, a medical instruction meaning 'nothing by mouth'.
Patient Education
Information provided to patients regarding their health condition and treatments.
Immune response
The body's defensive reaction to foreign substances.
Pain Management
Techniques and strategies used to reduce or alleviate patient pain.
Emphysema
A chronic lung condition often caused by smoking, characterized by destroyed alveoli.
Crohn's Disease
A chronic inflammatory bowel disease affecting the gastrointestinal tract.
Joint pain
Discomfort, pain, or inflammation in one or more joints.
Fluid Resuscitation
An essential medical intervention for restoring body fluid levels.
Dialysis Disequilibrium Syndrome (DDS)
A complication of dialysis characterized by headache, restlessness, and nausea due to rapid changes in blood chemistry.
Benzodiazepines
A class of psychoactive drugs used to treat a range of conditions, including seizures.
