Stimulates
To encourage the release of hormones in response to another hormone.
Inhibits
To suppress or prevent the release or secretion of a hormone.
Oogenesis
The process in which eggs are produced and released.
Estrogen
A steroid hormone responsible for the maintenance and development of the female reproductive system.
Progestin
A steroid hormone responsible for preparing and maintaining the uterus for implantation.
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
A hormone that stimulates the growth of follicles in the ovary.
Luteinizing hormone (LH)
A hormone that triggers ovulation and stimulates the corpus luteum.
Corpus luteum
The structure formed from the follicle post-ovulation that secretes hormones.
Menstruation
The shedding of the uterine lining when fertilization does not occur.
Spermatogenesis
The process of sperm cell development and production in the testes.
Leydig cells
Cells in the testes responsible for the production of testosterone.
Sertoli cells
Cells in the seminiferous tubules that support sperm cell development.
GnRH (Gonadotropin-releasing hormone)
A hormone released by the hypothalamus that stimulates the release of FSH and LH.
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)
A hormone secreted by an embryo that helps maintain the corpus luteum.
