Refrigeration
The process used to produce cooling by moving heat from low-temperature sources to high-temperature destinations.
Vapor Compression Cycle
A refrigeration process using a refrigerant that vaporizes and condenses to absorb and reject heat.
Refrigerant
A fluid with suitable properties for vaporizing and condensing in refrigeration systems.
Evaporator
A device in the refrigeration cycle that absorbs heat from the environment.
Condenser
A device that rejects heat during the refrigeration cycle.
Compressor
The component that circulates the refrigerant through the refrigeration cycle.
Latent Heat of Vaporization
The heat absorbed by a refrigerant when it changes from liquid to gas.
Latent Heat of Condensation
The heat released by a refrigerant when it changes from gas to liquid.
CFC
Chlorofluorocarbons, a group of refrigerants that were phased out due to their harmful effects on the ozone layer.
R-22
A refrigerant that was popular globally but phased out due to its ozone depletion potential.
Direct Expansion (DX) Systems
Systems that use refrigerant in the air-conditioning coils to cool air directly.
Chilled Water Systems
Cooling systems that produce chilled water centrally and distribute it to air-conditioning units.
Cooling Tower
A structure that produces water at appropriate temperatures for condensing by evaporative cooling.
Gravity Draft
A cooling tower air flow concept that relies on natural convection.
Induced Draft
A cooling tower air flow concept where fans draw air through the tower.
Forced Draft
A cooling tower air flow concept where fans push air into the tower.
