Two major body cavities
Dorsal and Ventral cavities
Spaces within the body that contain and protect internal organs.
Dorsal and Ventral cavities
Dorsal cavity location
Located along the back of the body and head
Inside the dorsal cavity
Contains organs of the nervous system
The dorsal cavity is divided..
Into two portions, spinal and cranial.
Located in the skull, surrounds and protects the brain
The cranial cavity
The cranial cavity is located
In the dorsal cavity
The spinal cavity is also located in the dorsal cavity, here is it located and what does it do?
The spinal cavity is located within the spinal column, surrounds and protects the spinal cord
Where is the ventral cavity located and what does it contain?
Located along the front of the body contains the organs of the cardiac
How is the ventral cavity divided? What are they?
Divided into three cavities, thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic.
Where is the thoracic cavity located and what does it do?
The thoracic cavity surrounds and protects the heart and lungs
What does the abdominal cavity contain?
The abdominal cavity contains primarily the major organs of digestion
Where is the pelvic cavity located and what does it contain?
The pelvic cavity is the space formed by the hip bones and contains primarily the organs of the reproductive and excretory systems
Is there a division between the abdominal and pelvic cavities? How are they referred to?
There is no physical division between the abdominal and pelvic cavities - sometimes referred to as the abdominopelvic cavity
Inguinal
means relating to the groin - refers to the entire lower area of the abdomen. The groin is the crease at the junction of the trunk with the upper end of the thigh
What is each cavity lined with?
Each cavity is lined by a membrane
What are the meninges, and where are the located?
In the posterior cavity, the meninges are the system of membranes which enclose the brain and spinal cord
How many layers are there that can line a cavity? What are they starting from the outside in?
There are three layers: from the outside they are the dura mater, arachnoid mater and pia mater.
How many layers in the ventral cavity?
In the ventral cavity there are two layers.
What membrane is up against the outside of the cavity?
The membrane which is up against the outside of the cavity is the parietal membrane
What membrane is adherent to the organs?
The membrane which is adherent to the organs (viscera) is the visceral membrane
What lines the abdominopelvic cavity?
The lining of the abdominopelvic cavity is the peritoneum
How many linings in the thoracic cavity?
There are two linings in the thoracic cavity
What membrane surrounds each lung?
The pleura surrounds each lung
What membrane surrounds the heart?
The heart is surrounded by the pericardium
