Ecce autem elapsus Pyrrhi de caede Polites,

But look, Polites having escaped/slipped from Phyrrus’ slaughter,

Unus natorum Priami, per tela, per hostes

One of Priam’s sons, through the weapons, through the enemy

Porticibus longis fugit et vacua atria lustrat/ saucius.

He fled through threw the long colonnades and traversed through the empty halls wounded.

Illum ardens infesto vulnere Pyrrhus/ insequitur,

Phyrrus, blazing [with fury] with a weapon ready to injure pursues him,

Iam iamque many tenet et premit hasta.

And even now he grasps with his hand and presses him hard with his spear.

Ut tandem ante oculos evasit et ora parentum,

When at last he came out/escaped before the eyes and faces of his parents,

Concidit ac multo vitam cum sanguine fudit.

He collapsed and with much blood poured out his life.

Hic Priamus, quamquam in media iam morte tenetur,

Then Priam, although he was already held in the midst of death,

Non tamen adstinuit nec voci iraeque pepercit:

Yet he did not hold back/refrain, nor did he spare his voice and his anger:

“At tibi pro scelere,” exclamat, “pro talibus ausis

He shouted out, “but for your crime, for such audacity (things having been dared)

Di, si qua est caelo pietas quae talia curet,

May the gods, if there is any righteousness in heaven which cares about such things,

Persolvant grates dignas et praemia reddant debita,

Pau worthy thanks and may they give you the due rewards,

Qui nati coram me cenere letum/ fecisti

You who have made me see the death of my son before my eyes

Et patrios foedasti funere vultus.

And defiled the father’s face with death.

At non ille, statum quo te mentiris, Achilles/ talis hoste fuit Priamo;

But that Achilles, from whom you lie that you were born, was not such/so cruel towards his enemy, Priam;

Sed iura fidemque/ supplicis erubit

But he felt shame for the laws and loyalty of a suppliant

Corpusque exsangue sepulcro/ reddidit Hectorem meque in me regna remisit.”

And he returned the bloodless body of Hector to the tomb and he sent me back to my kingdom.”
