Race

Discrimination

Systemic Racism

When the system is based on racist beliefs, operationalized through policy.

Interpersonal Racism

Overt or unacknowledged racism, including acts or statements of bigotry.

Employment Equity

Policies intended to correct disadvantages suffered by certain groups.

Group Closure

Restrictions on social contact, intermarriage, or trade based on race and ethnicity.

Scapegoating

An unfounded form of attack or blame directed to racial or ethnic minorities.

Genocide

Systematic and planned destruction of a racial, ethnic, religious, political, or cultural group.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)

Commission aimed at addressing the historical injustices faced by Indigenous peoples.

United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)

A document aimed at protecting the rights of Indigenous peoples, which received royal assent in Canada in 2021.

Racial Formation Theory

Theory that explains how social, economic, and political forces determine the content of racial categories.

Scientific Racism

The use of scientific data to justify racial classifications.

Fallacies of Weak Induction

Logical fallacies that include false causes, appeals to ignorance, and hasty generalizations.
