Consequentialism
An ethical theory that judges the morality of an action based on its consequences.
Intrinsic Good
Something that is good in itself, desired for its own sake.
Instrumental Good
Something that is desired for the sake of achieving something else.
Hedonism
The belief that pleasure is the only intrinsic good and pain is the only intrinsic bad.
Hedonistic Consequentialism
A form of consequentialism that considers the pleasure and painful consequences of an action as the primary standards for judging its morality.
Non-hedonistic Consequentialism
A form of consequentialism that rejects hedonism and considers other intrinsic goods as beneficial.
Exclusive non-hedonism
The belief that pleasure is not an intrinsic good and there are other goods like power or desire-satisfaction.
Inclusive non-hedonism
The belief that pleasure is an intrinsic good, but there are other intrinsic goods that are also considered beneficial.
Agent-relative Consequentialism
A consequentialist view that considers the consequences of an action on the welfare of the agent performing the action.
Agent-neutral Consequentialism
A consequentialist view that considers the consequences of an action on the welfare of both the agent and others affected by the action.
