Anavyssos Kouros
A carving (i.e., “sculpture”) that illustrates the Archaic style, which is an earlier mode of Greek art. Note the stiffness of the form, the lack of naturalism, and the archaic smile(corners of the mouth turned up). These attempts to animate the figure are not well integrated with the body as a whole. The leg is extended as the figure moves, but without any turn to the hips and shoulders, as occurs in true motion. The pose looks stiff.
