Race

a term used to identify physical differences between humans, and to categorise people on their physical similarities. Predominantly, physical indicators or traits such as skin pigmentation and facial features are used to categorise people into distinct racial groups

Racism

the discrimination of a group of people based on their shared physical characteristics and/or culture

Ethnicity

a social group, categorised by a distinctive way of life with set customary values. It focuses on socially-constructed cultural traits that are seen as important to a society rather than physical or biological features.

Ethnicity - Cultural Features

• Sense of ownership of a geographical or territorial place

• Unique language (dialect or slang)

• Religious beliefs or beliefs system

• Lifestyle, customs, traditions or specific ways of living

• Style of clothing, food, dance

• Collective history

Ethnicity is Different to Religion

people can share the same religion but be from different ethic groups
