Golgi Apparatus
A membrane-bound organelle in eukaryotic cells that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids for secretion or delivery to other organelles.
Cisternae
Flattened membranous sacs that make up the structure of the Golgi apparatus.
Trans Face
The shipping side of the Golgi apparatus where vesicles leave.
Cis Face
The receiving side of the Golgi apparatus where transport vesicles enter.
Vesicles
Small membrane-bound sacs that transport materials within the cell.
Phagocytosis
The cellular process of engulfing large particles to form an internal compartment called a phagosome.
Lysosome
A membranous sac of hydrolytic enzymes that digests macromolecules and recycles cellular components.
Autophagy
The process of degrading and recycling cellular components through lysosomes.
Endomembrane System
A network of membrane-bound organelles including the nuclear envelope, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and vesicles that work together to modify, package, and transport lipids and proteins.
Central Vacuole
A large membrane-bound sac in plant cells that stores water, organic compounds, and helps maintain turgor pressure.
