Who are you? Introduce yourself to the courts along with your job. (explain the bar)

I am Devon Moore. I am 32 years old, and I own The Bronze bar and restaurant at 666 Tecumseh Street. I purchased it a year ago, and before that managed the place for 4 years under the previous owners. I work at the bar 5 nights a week, due to financial pressures. The Bronze is a local institution, I’ve always loved it.

Can you describe your relationship with Nik and Jamie?

I knew both of them from the neighbourhood, we grew up more or less together, altho I’m 7 years older. My mom knew Nik’s mom, so I babysat Nik a tonna times when he was younger. Jamie was there often too, his own home wasn’t a great place as a kid. Now, they are regulars at my bar, so I see them often, catch up with them, all that stuff.

How would you describe Nik and Jamie?

They were always the best of friends, and a bunch of rascals, almost like real-life Weasley twins (?). Nik was the more responsible, level-headed one, probably kept Jamie out of trouble, Jamie was a regular rascal. Nik worked in landscaping since teenager years, then opened his own business earlier this year. I just loved him, being honest, reliable, the best guy to do your yard work.

I mean, they’ve been the best of friends, they’ve definitely had arguments in the past before, they’ve been through thick and thin, and they’ve always resolved their own problems. Jamie would never kill Nik over this one thing.

They were a couple of rascals, a bunch of young nice fellas. They were the best of buds, they were great friends together.

What happened the night of 27th October? (how u first saw Nik)

Nik came in around 10pm, wearing his Fighting Mallards jersey as a form of Halloween costume. He was hanging out, chilling, playing pool, talking with others, he’s quiet but sociable and nice to hang out with. I talked to Nik a little before it got too busy, to catch up and ask how he’s been doing.

5
New cards

What did Nik say? (during the conversation w you)

He said he had to let Jamie go from the landscaping company, almost reluctant like, but I wasn’t exactly surprised, since they had had troubles ever since he opened the company.

What did you think (about the whole contention) after talking to Nik?

I mean, I wasn’t surprised, I figured Jamie didn’t like just being an employee, like after all “we’re such good friends”. They’ve also worked together on and off. I mean it’s tough, I admire Nik for hiring Jamie because they are friends after all, personal friends. It’s really tough, and I’d know as a business owner, it’s hard to work professionally and business-like with friends you know? It’s especially hard as an owner. Jamie, he wasn’t a bad fellow, but he wasn’t a planner or long-sighted like Nik.

Please describe what happened after your chat with Nik. (seeing Jamie)

I first saw Jamie in the bar at 11:15pm, they were playing pool together. It was just like Nik, to be like, “Let’s talk over it with a little pool right”? To defuse the situation. Jamie looked rather pained and seemed downcast. It seemed like things were on the mend.

What happened afterwards? (after first seeing Jamie in the bar)

Jamie came up to the bar at 11:30, and we began chatting. He was really sad, and asked if the situation was basically his own fault. I said yeah, it’s basically your fault, you’re lucky to have Nik as a friend and shouldn’t be taken for granted. I could see that he was more sad than angry, and was having some positive reflections on his own attitude and the whole incident – I mean, otherwise I wouldn’t just say it’s all his fault. He was mostly sad and feeling guilty. Afterwards Jamie sort of wandered off, and that was the last time I saw Jamie.

Okay, when were you first alerted to Nik’s body?

Around 11:45 the group of pub crawlers left, and the crowd thinned. I took out the garbage at 12:15, and that’s when I found Nik on the ground where the garbage cans are, with blood everywhere. I immediately called 911.

Can you tell us about the area where Nik was found?

The back area of The Bronze isn’t even a patio, it just leads to the garbage bins. Some people go out there to smoke and vape, and many also smoke outside the front doors. The back door is only visible when you go towards the bathrooms, and it gives off “out of bounds” vibes. Although I do suppose that some nosy customers or others could possibly loiter down there, it’s not impossible. The Bronze has never had security cameras, mostly because there have been no major security issues. Again, it’s a local place and the police never have had problems with us. It’s never even occurred to me.

Do you agree with me that the weekend before Halloween might have crazy people as they party and weird fights? And you never thought of putting in security cameras?

Yes, there is always a possibility, it is a bar, but again this is a local institution and most are well behaved. I’ve never felt the need for a security camera, and there’s never been any problems with that.

18
New cards

Do you agree with me that some might call The Bronze seedy?

Yes, but you do know how different people might have different perspectives, opinions, worldviews, and this would all affect people’s judgements. We’ve never had any illegal activity tho, and the police have never picked a fight with us.

19
New cards

Do you agree with me that Jamie was rather reckless?

He was rather thoughtless, and not a planner for sure.

20
New cards

Do you agree with me that Jamie is the only one who has had contention with Nik recently?

I don’t know, I don’t exactly ask people about such personal matters every time I see them… Although he’s a good person, there are bound to be people with past contentions or grievances against Nik.

21
New cards

You said that Jamie looked red cheeked correct, then would you agree with me that he was drunk?

He was flushed, and pained, but he was still conversing with me and interacting with other people. He certainly was aware of his circumstances. I agree that he was drinking, but I can’t pass judgement.

22
New cards

Lou said that the sunflower guy was “complaining about this other guy”. Jamie was talking and remorseful?

Yeah, Jamie were sad and remorseful. I suppose the other guy heard wrongly since he was drinking and partying too. Besides I know what I was saying

23
New cards

You served Lou rudely and slowly

I mean, he budged into my conversation, and I was concerned for Jamie, my personal friend. At most you could say I was a little unprofessional, but nothing more

24
New cards

You told Jamie that it was basically his own fault right? Wouldn’t that affect Jamie badly?

yes, it would make him sadder, but i could sense his remorse and things were on the bend. Working at the bar has made me pretty good at room reading, and I couldn’t have read Jamie wrong.
