Bullying
An abuse of power; aggressive and typically repeated behavior with the intent to harm.
Instrumental Aggression
A type of aggression where the goal is to acquire something.
Hostile Aggression
A type of aggression where the goal is to hurt another person or animal.
Conflict Resolution Skills
Skills that allow school-age children to logically think, communicate effectively, and take on responsibilities to resolve disputes.
Power Imbalance
A situation in conflicts where one side holds more power than the other, often seen in bullying cases.
Cyberbullying
Bullying that occurs through electronic means, recognized as a top concern in educational settings.
Pink Shirt Day
A day observed on February 22 as an anti-bullying initiative that originated in Canada in 2007.
Restitution
The process of fixing what damage has been done in a bullying context.
Reconciliation
The process of healing and rebuilding the relationship between the bully and the bullied.
Family Support
Critical support that is associated with better health outcomes and positive well-being for students.
School Climate
The environment created in a school, which significantly impacts levels of bullying and fighting.
Friend Support
The type and nature of support received from friends that can impact healthy outcomes and behavior.
Contempt
A powerful dislike that leads to bullying, often involving a perceived superiority of one individual over another.
Imbalance of Power
A fundamental factor in bullying, where the bully exerts control or dominance over the victim.
3 R’s of Bullying Prevention
Restitution, Resolution, Reconciliation; methods used to address bullying behavior.
Community Support
Support derived from the community, which has weaker associations with positive health outcomes compared to family and school support.
Social Bullying
A form of bullying that involves harming someone’s social relationships or status.
Verbal Bullying
A bullying tactic that includes name-calling and insults.
Physical Bullying
A type of bullying that involves physical harm to the victim.
Self-discipline
The ability for a child to control their behavior and act kindly, based on their moral code.
Empathy
The ability to understand and share the feelings of another, which is often lacking in bullies.
Aggression
Behavior intended to harm another person or animal.
