ambiguity
A situation in which something can be understood in more than one way and initially the intended meaning is not clear.
cross-culture communication
Occurs when people from different cultures interact intending to reach mutual understanding.
jargon
Words used in a particular context or profession give them specific meanings known only to those familiar with the context or profession.
rapport
A connection between two people is based on trust and awareness of a common goal.
prejudice
A preformed opinion is often of a negative kind, based on ignorance, irrational feelings, and uninformed or inaccurate stereotypes.
suprasegmental
Elements of the voice (not words or body language) that affect the meaning of messages. There are two types: prosodic and paralinguistic features.
transliteration
The exact translation of each word/sound spoken regardless of meaning; these interpretations often have limited meaning.
comforting
The process used by the healthcare professional to ensure the

empowered to continue meeting the daily challenges in their life.
confidentiality
Keeping information within a particular context; involves keeping information private.
equality
Balance of power in a relationship through shared opportunities and mutual demonstrations of an attitude of acceptance.
ethnocentric
When an individual believes their particular method or way of approaching a situation is superior and indeed the best way.
diversity
Variety of something – cultures, opinions, beliefs etc.
disengagement
A process that leads to the disconnection of the individuals in a communicative act. It involves the satisfactory completion of an interaction.
pauses
When the communicating individuals do not produce words or sounds, providing an opportunity for thought and processing.
reflexive
Considering how the self affects and is affected by particular events to evaluate and critique the self; facilitates internal change to benefit relationships with people seeking assistance.
