Autonomic Nervous System
A part of the nervous system that controls involuntary bodily functions, consisting of nerves connected to the spine and general organs.
Sympathetic Nervous System
The division of the autonomic nervous system that prepares the body for stress-related activities, often referred to as the fight or flight response.
Fight or Flight Syndrome
A physiological reaction to a perceived harmful event, attack, or threat that prepares the body to either confront or flee from the danger.
Heart Rate Increase
A common physiological response when the sympathetic nervous system is activated, preparing the body for action.
Pupil Dilation
An increase in the size of the pupils, often occurring during stressful situations as part of the fight or flight response.
Decrease in Digestion
A physiological change during the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, as the body prioritizes energy for immediate survival over digestive processes.
Parasympathetic Nervous System
The division of the autonomic nervous system that promotes relaxation and conserves energy, often called the rest and digest system.
Neurotransmitter
Chemicals that transmit signals across a synapse in the nervous system; important in mediating the fight or flight response.
Adrenaline
A hormone and neurotransmitter released during stressful situations, associated with increased heart rate, blood pressure, and energy.
Ganglion
A collection of nerve cell bodies located outside the central nervous system, involved in the autonomic nervous system.
