Mental Health
A state of well-being in which individuals realize their abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and fruitfully, and contribute to their community.
Social Norms
Unwritten rules that dictate appropriate behavior in society, which can vary across cultures and change over time.
Ideal Mental Health
Consists of factors like a positive attitude towards oneself, personal growth, autonomy, resilience to stress, accurate perception of reality, and coping with life changes.
Loneliness
A feeling of isolation from social connections, intensified by modern society's geographical isolation and emotional support networks.
Bipolar Disorder
A mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression).
Unipolar Depression
A mood disorder that features persistent low mood and a loss of interest in activities, differing from bipolar disorder which includes manic episodes.
ICD Criteria
The International Classification of Diseases criteria for diagnosing unipolar depression, including persistent sadness, loss of interest, and fatigue.
Antidepressant Medication
Medicines used to treat depression by regulating neurotransmitters, especially serotonin, in the brain.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
A psychological treatment that focuses on changing negative thought patterns to improve mental health outcomes.
Addiction
A psychological condition characterized by compulsive engagement in rewarding stimuli despite adverse consequences.
Heritability
The extent to which variation in a trait can be attributed to genetic factors within a population.
Social Learning Theory (SLT)
A theory suggesting that behaviors are learned through observation and interaction with others, impacting addictive behaviors.
Aversion Therapy
A behavioral treatment that associates an undesired habit with unpleasant stimuli to reduce the frequency of the behavior.
Self-Management Programs
Support structures such as the 12-step program that help individuals struggling with addiction through peer support and shared experiences.
Maladaptive Thoughts
Negative thought patterns that contribute to mental health issues, particularly in the context of CBT.
Neurotransmitters
Chemicals in the brain that transmit signals between nerve cells, playing a crucial role in regulating mood and behavior.
