Long Bones

\-found in arms and legs, as well as fingers and toes

\-cylindrical in shape, being longer than it is wide-functions as a lever; they move when muscles contract

Short Bones

\-cube-like in shape-found in carpals of wrists and tarsals of ankles

\-provide stability and support

Flat Bones

\-typically thin, it can also be curved-includes skull bones, shoulder blades, sternum, and the ribs-serves as a point of attachment for muscles and often protects internal organs

Irregular Bones

\-does not have a definite shape-tend to have more complex shapes, like vertebrae-many facial bones are classified as this type of bone

Sesamoid Bones

\-small, round bone that is shaped like a sesame seed-form in tendons where a lot of pressure is generated in a joint

\-vary in number and placement from person to person, but are typically found in tendons associated with feet, hands, and knees

Sutural Bones

\-small, flat, irregularly shaped bones

\- between the flat bones of the skull

\- there is individual variation in the number, shape, and position
