What is a wound?
A break in the skin or mucous membrane, commonly resulting from surgery, trauma, unrelieved pressure, friction, decreased blood flow, or nerve damage.
What does the term 'constrict' mean in wound care?
To narrow.
What is a skin tear?
A break or rip in the outer layer of the skin, often occurring in common areas like the hands, arms, and lower legs.
What are common causes of skin tears?
Friction or shearing due to falls, tight holding, use of adhesives, and activities like bathing.
Who is most at risk for skin tears?
The elderly population, whose skin can be very fragile and thin.
What is a circulatory ulcer?
Ulcers found on lower legs and feet caused by decreased blood flow through the arteries or veins.
What are venous (stasis) ulcers?
Open sores on lower legs or feet caused by poor venous blood flow.
Where are arterial ulcers commonly found?
Arterial ulcers are found on the lower legs or feet, specifically between the toes, on tops of toes, and the outer side of the ankle.
How do diabetic foot ulcers develop?
They are caused by complications from diabetes affecting nerves and blood vessels, which leads to a lack of sensation.
What are some methods to prevent circulatory ulcers?
Reposition every 2 hours, avoid tight clothing, provide good skin care, and avoid sitting with legs crossed.
What do elastic stockings do?
They apply pressure on veins to promote venous blood flow and may help prevent blood clots.
What is the function of wound dressings?
They protect wounds, absorb drainage, remove dead tissue, promote comfort, cover unsightly wounds, and provide a moist healing environment.
What is important to remember when applying heat for musculoskeletal injuries?
Heat relieves pain, promotes healing, and should be carefully monitored to avoid burns.
What complications can arise from heat applications?
High temperatures can cause burns, and prolonged heat can narrow blood vessels.
What is the purpose of cold applications?
To treat sprains and fractures, reduce pain, prevent swelling, decrease bleeding, and lower fevers.
What should be monitored when applying cold applications?
Skin should be observed for burns, pain, or other complications, as prolonged use can cause tissue damage.
What is hypoxia?
A condition where cells do not have enough oxygen.
What are normal respiratory rates for adults?
12-20 breaths per minute.
What is pulse oximetry used for?
To measure a person's oxygen concentration, with normal saturation being between 95-100%.
What is oxygen considered in a medical context?
Oxygen is considered a drug and should not be administered or adjusted by untrained individuals.
What safety measure must be observed for individuals using oxygen?
They cannot be allowed to smoke.
