Define "cardinal temperatures" and list the three specific temperatures they refer to.
Cardinal temperatures are the minimum, maximum, and optimal temperatures at which an organism grows best.
What is optimal temperature range for a psychrophile? and give an example
15°C.
Example: Psychrotolerants like Listeria grow at fridge temps
What is the optimal temperature range for a Mesophile?
20-40°C.
What is the optimal temperature range for a Thermophile?
60°C
What is the optimal temperature range for a Hyperthermophile?
85-113°C
What is an obligate aerobe?
Requires atmospheric oxygen (20%) to grow.
What is a microaerophile?
Requires oxygen but at lower concentrations (2–10%).
Ex: Helicobacter pylori.
What is a facultative anaerobe?
Does not require oxygen but grows better when it is present.
How do aerotolerant anaerobes and obligate anaerobes differ in their relationship with oxygen?
—> Aerotolerant anaerobes:
Grow with or without oxygen
oxygen doesn't harm them.
—> Obligate anaerobes:
Grow only when oxygen is not present
it is toxic to them
Ex: P. gingivalis.
