Red Blood Cell
Erythrocyte:Transports oxygen and carbon dioxide; lives for 120 days
Plasma
Yellowish fluid, 90% water, 10% dry matter
Leukocyte
White Blood Cell
Granular leukocytes
Basophil, Neutrophil, Eosinophil
Platelet
Thrombocyte: Releases chemicals necessary for blood clotting; important for hemostasis
Neutrophil (50% - 70%)
Functions in cellular defense - Phagocytosis of microorganisms
Lymphocyte (25% - 35%)
Produces antibodies and other chemicals responsible for destroying microorganisms; contributes to allergic reactions, regulation of immune system
Monocyte (3% - 9%)
Migrates from the blood and becomes a macrophage (phagocytizes bacteria, dead cells, cell fragments, and other debris within tissues)
Eosinophil (< 5%)
Phagocytosis of protozoa and parasitic worms; Releases antiinflamatory substances
Basophil (< 1%)
Releases histamine (to promote inflammation) and heparin (to prevents clot formation)
