What is the meaning of ‘noble stature’
A character of nobility/ high status - a tragic hero must begin from this position to allow them to ‘fall’
What is the meaning of a harmartia (fatal flaw)
The hero must ‘fall’ due to an error in judgement, mistake or fatal flaw.
What is often the hamartia
Often the flaw is a hubris (excessive pride) when mortals think they can do better than gods.
What happens to a hamartia in Shakespeare
In Shakespeare this happens when characters think they can avoid/change their fate
What is a peripeteia
A reversal of fortune. The hero has free will but makes a mistake, often ignoring warnings (point of no return)
What is an anagnorisis
Self-realisation. The lightbulb moment. The hero accepts the truth and how he has fallen, before he dies.
What is a catastrophe
The tragic hero is punished for his mistake. The audience must feel pity for him, so the punishment must be irreversible and excessive =death
What is a catharsis
The audience will have felt pity and fear for the tragic hero but relief at the end: purging of emotion, often accompanied by crying
