Invasive Species
Species not native to an area, often introduced by human transport, with no natural predators to control their population.
r-selected species
Species with high biotic potential and low parental care, often fast-growing and adaptable, making them more likely to be invasive.
Zebra Mussel
An invasive species transported by ship ballast water, aggressive filter feeders that clog intake pipes and disrupt aquatic ecosystems.
Emerald Ash Borer
An invasive insect spread by wood packing material, laying larvae in trees and disrupting nutrient transport, leading to tree death.
Kudzu Vine
Originally planted to limit soil erosion, this invasive vine grows rapidly, outcompeting native plants for sunlight.
Cane Toad
Introduced in Australia to control cane beetles, this invasive species has a huge appetite, leading to declines in native amphibian and reptile populations.
Asian Carp
Brought to control algae growth, this invasive fish escaped into rivers and outcompetes native fish for food and space.
Pythons
Brought to Florida as pets, these invasive snakes have no natural predators, leading to significant declines in mammal populations.
