• The head state of Italy - everything revolves around this region

• Northern Region of Italy

• There was a process to unite all the regions by the main region - Piemonte-Sardinia

• Kingdom of Piemonte had a lot of power but was weak compared to other countries

Duchy of Parma, Modena and Tuscany

3 regions which combined to form the Kingdom of Italy in 1860

Papal States

• Central Italy, extending from Lazio to Emilia-Romagna (including Umbria and Marche)

• Very religious state - includes Rome, a very religious city

Kingdom of 2 Sicilies

• Located in the Southern half of Italy

• Creation of the Mafia due to the neglection of this state

• The Mafia is a very powerful and present aspect of the region - they formed their own state within a state

Former nations of Austria

• Addition of Lombardia and Veneto (previously part of the Austrian Empire) - this region was already an italophone region

  • They had a strong influence on Italian politics

• This occurred after Napoleon III agreed to help Italy in the case that Austria attacked Italy

• In return for Nice and Savoie, Veneto and Lombardia were won from Austria

• Germanic and Franco influence in the northern regions create a culture change in the north
