pelvic girdle

pelvic girdle

consists of two coxal bones that articulate with each other anteriorly and with the sacrum posteriorly

sacrum, coccyx, and pelvic girdle together form the bowl-shaped pelvis, or pelvic region

pelvic girdle supports the trunk, provides attachments for the lower limbs, and protects the urinary bladder, the distal end of the large intestine, and the internal reproductive organs

coxal bone

ilium, ischium, and a pubis

doesnt fuse until late teens and doesnt fully ossify until early twenties

fusion occurs in the region of a cup-shaped cavity called the acetabulum

ilium

largest and uppermost portion of the hip bone, flares outward, forming prominence of the hip

margin of this prominence called the iliac crest

posteriorly, ilium joins the sacrum at the sacroiliac joint

anteriorly, a projection of the ilium, the anterior superior iliac spine, can be felt lateral to the groin and provides attachments for ligaments and muscles

the ischium

forms lowest portion of the hip bone

L-shaped

ischial tuberosity points posteriorly and downward. has a rough surface that provides attachment for ligaments and lower limb muscles

also supports the weight of the body during sitting

above ischial tuberosity, near junction of ilium and ischium, is ischial spine (sharp projection)

pubis

constitutes the anterior portion of the hip bone

two pubic bones come together at the midline, forming a joint called the pubic symphysis

angle bones form below the symphysis is the pubic arch

provides muscle attachment for muscles of lower limbs
