Parasitism
A relationship where one organism (the parasite) benefits at the expense of another organism (the host), which is harmed.
Ectoparasites
Parasites that live on the outside of the host organism.
Endoparasites
Parasites that live inside the host organism.
Vertical transmission
Transmission of a parasite from parent to offspring.
Horizontal transmission
Transmission of a parasite between individuals other than parent and offspring.
S-I-R model
A model representing the dynamics of disease transmission, consisting of Susceptible, Infected, and Resistant populations.
Reservoir species
Species that carry a parasite but do not succumb to disease, serving as a continuous source of infection.
Infection resistance
The ability of a host to prevent infection through immune response or behavior.
Infection tolerance
The ability of a host to minimize harm from an infection.
Red Queen Hypothesis
An evolutionary hypothesis that suggests hosts and parasites are in an ongoing 'arms race' to evolve defenses and counter-defenses.
