Monroe Doctrine

1823 written by John Quincy Adams during the presidency of James Monroe. expressed 4 principles for a new vision for foreign policy. 1) Europeans could no longer colonize territory of the western hemisphere (southern/northern America. 2) American and European nations were different because nations in the Americas had elected governments and nations in Europe had monarchies. 3) the US would view any European involvement in the western hemisphere as a threat that could lead to war. 4) the US would stay out of European affairs. Influenced the United States for many years as a more isolationist nation.

Election of 1824

candidates: John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, William H. Crawford, Henry Clay. None received a majority of electoral votes. Clay was soon elminated according to the consitution and put his support towards Adams. The election of 1824 laid the groundwork for a new system of political parties. Supporters of Jackson and Crawford would soon unite in a new organization, the Democratic Party, determined to place Jackson in the White House in 1828. The alliance of Clay and Adams became the basis for the Whig Party of the 1830s. John Quincy wins

John Quincy Adams

Son of John Adams and secretary of state of James Monroe. served as an ambassador of many different countries. wrote the monroe doctrine. he strongly supported the american system of government-sponsored economic development. he hoped to encourage american commerce throughout the world and enhance american influence in the western hemisphere. concluded an an agreement with great britain fixing the canadian-american border at the 49th parallel (northern boundary of the louisiana purchase). during the election of 1824 . Adams's support came from the north Republican leaders insisted the time had come for the South to relinquish the presidency.

election of 1828 he created the democratic party. he represented a new political era. he was the son of a tavern keeper and not a person of vision or intellect. he insisted political parties were necessary and a desirable element of political life. party competition would provide a check on those in power and offered voters a real choice in elections.

Jackson decisively won the election, carrying 55.5% of the popular vote and 178 electoral votes, to Adams' 83. The election marked the rise of Jacksonian Democracy and the transition from the First Party System to the Second Party System.
