Nursing
The protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, and alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response.
Profession
A specialized occupation requiring extensive education and training, governed by a code of ethics, focused on serving society.
Accountability
The ownership of the result of tasks performed which cannot be delegated; a professional responsibility.
Advocacy
The act of protecting patients’ rights and promoting their best interests.
Informed Consent
A legal and ethical requirement in which a patient is fully educated on the risks, benefits, and alternatives of a procedure before agreeing to it.
Data Privacy Act of 2012
Regulates the collection, processing, and storage of personal data, mandating consent and enforcing penalties for violations.
Health Promotion
Activities aimed at enhancing wellness and preventing disease, such as health teaching and immunization.
Curative Care
The treatment of disease and alleviation of symptoms; focused on diagnosis and therapeutic interventions.
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
A model explaining how the body responds to stress through three stages: alarm reaction, resistance, and exhaustion.
Wellness

Subjective Illness

Host-Agent-Environment Model
A health model stating that health is dependent on the interaction of the host, agent causing disease, and environmental factors.
Holistic Health Model
An approach that views the body, mind, and spirit as inseparable, emphasizing overall wellness.

A set of guarantees ensuring access to quality healthcare, including rights to informed consent, privacy, and humane treatment.
Autonomy
The ability of a profession to regulate itself and make independent decisions.
