Republicanism
A political ideology centered around the idea of a government without a monarch, where representatives are elected by the citizens.
Monarchy
A form of government with a monarch at the head, often inheriting power.
Shays' Rebellion
An armed uprising in 1786-87 by Massachusetts farmers protesting economic injustices and the lack of government response.
Coverture
A legal doctrine whereby, upon marriage, a woman's legal rights and obligations were subsumed by those of her husband.
Fugitive Slave Clause
A provision in the Constitution requiring the return of escaped slaves to their owners.
Gradual emancipation
A legal process that slowly abolishes slavery over a set period rather than all at once.
Northwest Ordinance
A law passed in 1787 outlining the process for admitting new states to the Union from the Northwest Territory.

The cultivation of habits important for the success of the community; central to the foundational ideologies of republicanism.
Anti-authoritarianism
Resistance against oppressive government; a key sentiment in the American Revolution.
