Iron Curtain
A political metaphor described by Winston Churchill in 1946, referring to the division of Europe both physically and politically at the end of World War II.
Long telegram
A communication sent by George Kennan stating that the USSR believes in 'capitalistic encirclement', anticipates no peaceful coexistence, and that to deal with Soviet ideology, only force will work.
Sphere of influence
The claim by a state to exclusive or predominant control over a foreign area or territory, which may refer to either a political claim or a legal agreement.
Satellite states
Formally independent states that are heavily influenced or controlled by a more powerful country, such as Czechoslovakia, Poland, and Hungary during the Cold War.
