Goal of chemistry
Understand matterand the changes matter undergoes.
matter
anything that has mass and occupies space. will have volume and can be weighed
nonmatter
no mass and does not take up space. includes things like forces, energy, and abstrace concepts such as love.
pure science
used for learning and curiosity
applied science
has a goal driving it like to solve a problem or to develop technology.
organic chemistry
focuses on compounds that have repeating carbon in it.
inorganic chemistry
focuses on compounds that do not have carbon in it. this includes water.
biochemistry chemistry.
focuses on used or produced by living things
envirornmental chemistry
focuses on chemistry and its interaction in the world around us.
pros of chemistry
increases learning, makes life easier, solves problems, and develops technology. example: deveops life saving medicines and vaccines.
cons of chemistry
creates new probelems like pollution, weapons, and abuse.
systematic error
error that would affect all of the data the same way (major error)
random error
error that would effect some of the data such as small fluctuations.
personal error
accidents and carelessness.
scientific significance
the effect of the data must show a change greater than or equal to 5% or affect the test population by 5% or more.
acceptable error
when the expiriment is preformed to confirm a targeted, or accepted theoretical value the experimental data must be less than or equal to 5%
scientific law
a statment that describes an observed natural phenomenon. the observation or experiment has been repeated many times.
scientific theory
a well tested explanation for a natural phenomenon. Explains why the phenomenon occurs. based on evidence.
