Olfactory (CN I)
Sensory nerve responsible for the sense of smell.
Optic (CN II)
Sensory nerve responsible for visual acuity.
Oculomotor (CN III)
Motor nerve responsible for eye movement and pupil dilation.
Trochlear (CN IV)
Motor nerve responsible for vertical eye movement.
Abducens (CN VI)
Motor nerve responsible for lateral movement of eyeballs.
Trigeminal (CN V)
Both sensory (facial sensation) and motor (facial expression) nerve.
Facial (CN VII)
Both sensory (taste) and motor (facial expression) nerve.
Vestibulocochlear (CN VIII)
Sensory nerve responsible for hearing and balance.
Glossopharyngeal (CN IX)
Both sensory (taste) and motor (swallowing) nerve.
Vagus (CN X)
Both sensory (sensation in throat and visceral muscles) and motor (vocal cords) nerve.
Accessory (CN XI)
Motor nerve responsible for head and shoulder movement.
Hypoglossal (CN XII)
Motor nerve responsible for tongue movement.
Coordination and Skilled Movements
Assessments include rapid rhythmic alternating movements and accuracy of movements.
Romberg test
A test assessing balance by having the patient close their eyes, with feet together.
Stereognosis
The ability to identify familiar objects by touch while eyes are closed.
Two-point discrimination
The ability to discern that two nearby objects touching the body are truly two distinct points.
Graphesthesia
The ability to recognize writing on the skin merely by the sensation of touch.
