To investigate the duration of short term memory
What is the procedure?
Used a sample of 24 psychology students in 8 trials
They were given trigams and numbers to count backwards from until they were told to stop.
On each trial they were told to stop at varying period of time 3,6,9,12,15 or 18 seconds
Findings
Found that the longer the interval the less accurate the recall.
3 seconds= 80% recall
18s =0.3 mins about 3% recall
What is the conclusion?
The duration of STM may be about 18 seconds
